Gaming year in review: 2014

Happy new year everyone! I hope 2015 will be a great year for everyone 😀 I’m still working on my personal year in review entry, but first, here’s my gaming year in review!

I started this a few years ago to look back and give a brief review of every game I played in the past year. I only count games that I hadn’t played before, are remakes, or have new content. (In other words, I don’t count any replays that didn’t have anything new to them.)

Here are my favorites for 2014! (These are out of the games I played in 2014. It doesn’t mean that they were released in 2014.)

Favorite single player: Just Cause 2
This is a game that should not be taken seriously. Its main objective is to cause “chaos” which basically means: blow up as much stuff as you can. Just Cause 2 is just plain fun and one of the better open world games I’ve played. It’s kind of repetitive, the map is ridiculously huge, and there is a loose story in there somewhere, but it’s sooooo fun to mess around and do stupid things.

Favorite multiplayer: Diablo III: Reaper of Souls
I played D3 back when it first released, and I thought it was just alright. I got back into it for the expansion, and wow, that large patch that released around the same time really improved the game. It was easier to get relevant loot and to raise the difficulty levels. The new content from the expansion also made it more interesting. The game became much more enjoyable, and I had fun starting a new character with my husband.

Favorite indie/download: Guacamelee
Guacamelee is like a fighting game and platformer combined. You learn fighting moves to defeat enemies, but then you have to use them to go through platforming levels. I thought it was a creative spin on platformers, especially with the dimension switching, and the humor and art style are nice touches too. I also loved all of the meme and video game references in it.

Japan trip, part 1: Fuji Q and Shibuya

My husband and I arrived in Tokyo, Japan on 10/28 in the evening and were just exhausted. It was a long flight and I barely slept, so we just checked into our hotel in Shinjuku, walked around a bit, ate dinner at an udon place, and then went to bed.

The next day (10/29), we woke up nice and early and headed to the Fuji Five Lakes area, which is about 2 hours away from Tokyo by bus or train. Most people come to this area to get a good view of Mt. Fuji. We were there for an amusement park called Fuji Q Highland 🙂

The park is near the base of Mt. Fuji and actually had a great view of it. We saw Mt. Fuji clearly the entire time we were at the park. The best view was at the top of a roller coaster, where you could see it totally unobstructed… before being launched down a steep slope at fast speeds.

I thought it was a great idea that the park charges a low admission fee (1400 yen, ~$12) and then charges per ride. You could also get the “free pass” for 5200 yen (~$45) which lets you ride everything for free. It’s only worth it for roller coasters, so people who don’t like them can save money by paying for the smaller rides as they go.

The making of apple pie

I love pie, but I really don’t make it enough. The problem is the amount of food. My husband and I shouldn’t eat a whole pie (I almost said “couldn’t” but then I realized that wasn’t true), and it’s also not enough to share with my coworkers (I double my cookie and cake/cupcake recipes for work). Having people over is pretty much the perfect time.

This morning when we went to do yard work, we saw that apples had grown in on our apple tree! Today also happens to be when we’re hosting a football watching party, so it was the perfect time to make some apple pie 🙂 This is a recipe my mom has been using for several years, with a few modifications by me.

The first thing I make is the dough because it needs to be refrigerated for at least an hour before it’s used. Homemade dough may seem intimidating, but it’s actually quite easy and uses very little ingredients.

When it comes to cookies, cakes, and frosting, you usually start with room temperature butter because it allows more air to be beaten in. For pies and tarts, you typically use cold butter, and it’s easier to use when cut into smaller pieces and slowly added into the mix. My mom does this part by hand, but I like using my stand mixer with a flat beater. (A large food processor would work as well.)
