My Favorite Things: February 2017

I’ve been having trouble finishing a few blog drafts lately, but then I remembered that I haven’t written about recent favorites yet this year. Since I skipped it last month, this will cover things I’ve been loving the past couple of months!

Movie: Moana

I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a Disney musical movie this much. Moana was such a fun and beautiful movie to watch. I loved watching her journey, and the music, oh man the music. The past month or so, I’ve been addicted to its soundtrack, especially We Know The Way, How Far I’ll Go, Where You Are, and I Am Moana.

As much as I appreciate female characters fighting against stereotypes, it’s also nice when they’re just not there to begin with? No one questioned that Moana would be the next chief or tried to marry her off, everyone was forbidden from leaving the island (not just Moana), and Maui underestimated her because she was mortal, not because of her gender. Seriously, finally.

Timeless Thoughts: My Grandparents’ House

It’s been a while since I participated in Timeless Thoughts, which is a linkup hosted by Tara and Georgie! I have been scanning old photos lately and have been thinking back on my time as a child in New York.

Back in December, I wrote about my aunt’s passing and about how my dad’s side of the family is very close. Growing up, we used to have get-togethers all the time at my paternal grandparents’ house in Brooklyn. Sadly, we sold the house after my grandpa passed away (my grandma moved in with one of my uncles), so I actually haven’t seen it in almost 20 years. Even without the photos, I can remember their place very well.

If you’ve never been to Brooklyn before, a lot of the neighborhoods look like this, with houses that are 2-3 stories (not including the basement) and can consist of 2-3 apartments. My grandparents owned theirs, so they lived on the first floor and rented out the apartments above.

Recap: January 2017

January was a month of getting back into the work routine, post processing a ton of photos, and trying not to play Diablo 3 too much. In the past, I haven’t been consistent in summing up my month, but since I’m trying out monthly goals, it seems like a good idea to do!

Usually after the holidays, I can ease back into my work. This time I didn’t have that leisure and was immediately put on a major project that has hard deadlines. On top of that, I’ve had to figure out some team transitions. I transitioned my team of designers to a different manager (one who is actually a UX/design person), and I picked up a second team of developers instead. It’s been very busy!

Other than work, I’ve gotten back into running. Texas often doesn’t understand what “winter” is, so we’ve been having a lot of spring-like weather. I’m taking advantage of that by running outside more, and it especially feels good after work. Then I spend the night watching shows, playing games, and working on photos. Recently, I’ve been watching One Piece, Psycho Pass 2, and Voltron season 2 – the last of which I finished fairly quickly. I like how Netflix releases all episodes at once, but the downside is that some people bing it in a day or two and then post spoilers online. It makes me feel like I have to rush through them =/ (Why do people feel the need to post spoilers so soon???)
